3-Day Painting Workshop with Derek Penix

Award winning artist, Derek Penix presents a 3-day workshop for all skill levels from beginner to advanced. Penix will cover topics such as the power of warms and cools, complimentaries, harmony, edges, shape-quality, variety, simplifying, loosening brushwork, elements of design, elements of light and shadow, the power of suggestion and seeing in terms of mass and shape relationships. There will be a strong emphasis on making your paintings more three-dimensional. Students will use oils (other mediums are welcome) to paint from photos. They will have a choice of dozens of photographs consisting of boats, cityscapes, figures, birds, hanging fruit and fish. Students will also have the option to paint from their own photos if they choose.

Drawing Bootcamp with Alan Larkin

This class talks about the science of drawing. It is based on a class in observational drawing that I taught at Indiana University for almost 40 years. The class stressed important concepts in observing and how to use them together to strengthen our abilities to draw representational work.

Painting The Rural Midwest In Watercolor with Dale L. Popovich IWS

This year’s 2 full-day workshop will focus on the beautiful farms and the landscape of the rural Midwest. The student will experience Dale Popovich’s unique step-by-step instruction in transparent watercolor. Teaching as a paint-along will allow the student to watch, go back and recreate what was just painted. Dale will also stress to his students to ask as many questions as they wish while he is painting. Bring your camera because he will let you snap photos along the way. He feels sharing his knowledge in all ways is the key to excellent learning.

Indiana Printmakers Get Their Due

Indiana's great printmaking history continues through the work of today's artists from across Indiana. A rare exhibit of the Brown County Art Gallery’s entire early Indiana print collection featuring etchings by L.O. Griffith, Kenneth Reeve, Will Vawter and more. In addition, current printmakers from 3 major print organizations will be exhibiting and selling their work. At least 30 printmakers from across Indiana are expected to participate. Part of the proceeds will benefit the Brown County Art Gallery Foundation. The Indiana Historical Society also funded the conservation and framing of 18 rare sketches by Will Vawter that were used as illustrations for the James Whitcomb Riley poetry books. The sketches along with original illustrations and a collection of Vawter paintings will be exhibited as well. The sketches feature people from Brown County in everyday situations.

William McKendree Snyder “The First To Come”

William McKendree Snyder was an American painter active in Indiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries best known for detailed Indiana landscapes. He was one of the first artists to paint in Brown County, Indiana making him a forerunner of the Brown County Art Colony. He studied with Eaton, Bierstadt and Inness and influenced by the Hudson River School. December 20, 1848 – September 30, 1930. View this private collection exhibit of this turn of the century Southern Indiana artist's work. A special program by Rachel Berenson Perry will be scheduled during the exhibit. Gallery hours 10 am - 5 pm, Sunday Noon - 5 pm. Free admission and free parking.

The 3-day workshop will focus on using plein-air sketches, drawings or photographs to create large studio pieces. While maintaining the freshness and mood of your plein-air paintings, you will discover the advantages that the time, and the use of techniques when painting in the studio provide. Roger will share some of his techniques, as well as focus on tonality, value, simplifying, how to use color correctly, and compositions.
