Morel Mushroom Festival
May 1 - May 8
Brown County State Park’s annual Morel Mushroom Festival is on and bigger than ever! This year we will spend an entire week paying homage to the fan favorite Morel Mushrooms! This event will include mushroom programs, hikes, talks, and crafts daily, as well as an ONLINE morel mushroom sale. The mushrooms will be available for purchase starting on May 1st on the Friends of Brown County State Parks website, www.friendsbcsp.org. Mushrooms will be available for pick-up on May 8th from 10am-2pm at the Nature Center.
Biggest and Smallest Mushroom Contest: Bring your largest or smallest mushroom to the Nature Center (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.) anytime during festival week to enter for a chance to win some great prizes and bragging rights! Winners announced on May 8th.
Schedule of Events:
11 a.m., Mushroom Talk w/ David Mow: Get an in-depth look at mushrooms from around the state of Indiana and learn more than you ever thought possible during this great talk. This talk will meet at the Nature Center in the shelter house.
1 p.m. – 4 p.m., Kids Mushroom Scavenger Hunt: Enjoy this hike along the Discovery Trail and we spot and learn more about the different mushrooms that can be found here in Brown County and when you are likely to see them. This hike is self-led and can be done anytime between 1pm and 4pm on the Discovery Trail next to the Nature Center.
11am- Make a Morel: Come to the Nature Center to make a Morel out of CLAY! Spend some time molding your own Morel to take home and enjoy the beauty of Morel Mushrooms all year long! This program meets in the Shelter House next to the Nature Center.
May 3rd & 4th
Park Wide Scavenger Hunt: On the 3rd and 4th, take a hike along any of our trails to see if you can spot one of our hidden Morels. Pick one of these paper morels and bring it to the Nature Center for a fun prize. Please try to pick only one per person to let others have a chance for a prize as well. Nature Center open from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. daily.
11 a.m., May the Forest be With You Hike: Take a fun hike with our naturalist to learn more about forest health and what we are doing to manage our forests. We will also take a look at the State Endangers Yellowwood Tree on this hike. This hike will meet at the Rally Camp Parking Lot. We will be hiking Trail 5.
1 p.m., Wild Edibles Hike: Not only the mushrooms are edible. Learn more about some of the other edible things found in the forest during this fun hike. We will meet at the Nature Center and hike along the Discovery Trail.
10 a.m., Turtle Time: Our turtles gotta eat too! Come watch as we feed our turtles and learn more about them! Meets at the Nature Center
11 a.m., Poetry Hike: We know how much you LOVE mushrooms. Join us on this poetry hike as we read some mushroom themed poems. Meets at the Nature Center. Hike takes place along the Discovery Trail
2 p.m., Mushroom Paint Along: Come to the Shelter House next to the Nature Center and paint along with a naturalist as we paint the ever coveted Morel Mushroom. Take the painting home with you to enjoy for years to come!

11 a.m., Hiking in Snake Country: Meet at the Nature Center as we learn how to hike safely when looking for Morel Mushrooms. We will hike along the Discovery Trail and learn about hiking in Snake Country!
2 p.m., Make a Morel: Come to the Nature Center to make a Morel out of CLAY! Spend some time molding your own Morel to take home and enjoy the beauty of Morel Mushrooms all year long! This program meets in the Shelter House next to the Nature Center.
