As part of a 2020 Arts in the Parks Project, sponsored by the Indiana Arts Commission, Sam Bartlett hosts Crankies in the Park at Brown County State Park. This event takes place consecutive weekends, September 12-13, and 19-20, in the park’s Nature Center Shelter House. It’s socially distanced entertainment — with many crankie shows and live traditional banjo music. Attendees can also participate in the storytelling as Sam creates the world premiere of the Brown County State Park Cranky Show. Free to attend with park gate fees.
A crankie is an illustrated story that is scrolled, by hand, between two dowels. Sometimes the dowels are inside a box, which acts like a tiny theater, creating the atmosphere of a paper movie.
Saturday, September 12:
1 p.m. -4 p.m., Cranky Show Performances and Traditional Banjo Tunes
Twenty-minute performances at the top of every hour, followed by the live creation of the Brown County State Park Cranky Show. Watch a Cranky Show, listen to the banjo, and learn about the natural and human history of Brown County State Park. Socially distanced! Entertainment for all ages!
7-8pm, Cranky Shows and Traditional Music
The history, wonder, and old-time entertainment of the Cranky Show — an hour of Cranky Shows and traditional music on banjo and accordion.
