T.C. Steele State Historic Site to celebrate 26 years of creativity in Brown County

NASHVILLE, Ind. - T.C. Steele State Historic Site will be mixing palates and palettes as food and art converge during the 26th anniversary of the Great Outdoors Art Contest & Local Tastings slated for September 13 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the T.C. Steele State Historic Site, located at 4220 TC Steele Road in Brown County.

"In celebration of the birthday of Historic Site namesake Theodore Clement Steele, the Great Outdoors Art Contest & Local Tastings integrates history, art and nature as people come together to watch and support artists while enjoying various crafts and tastings provided by vendors," said State Historic Site Manager Andrea DeTarnowsky. "This event gives artists and visitors a unique insight into T.C. Steele's art and method of painting, en plein air , or out-of-doors. The event has been lauded the 'granddaddy' of Indiana PaintOuts by the Indiana Plein Air Painters Association."

Artists will have a chance to create an original piece of artwork from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the site. Judging will began at 2 p.m. and visitors will have a chance to view artists' artwork and cast their ballots for the People's Choice awards. The winning artworks will be announced at 3 p.m. and will be prominently displayed in T.C. Steele's Large Studio for 30 days following the event, for all to enjoy.

A specialty fair featuring local artisanal crafts and tastings is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. Guests will be able to sample and purchase beer provided by Bier Brewery of Indianapolis as well as BBQ pulled pork, chicken salad and various sides from Mike's Dance Barn. In addition to the tasting, there will be a live outdoor concert featuring Hazelwood String Band and artist Joshua Phillippe will be exhibiting his residency project #indiana46.

Whether you are just starting out or consider yourself a professional, we encourage artists of all ages to participate in the contest. Participating artists must be pre-registered for the art contest. Artist registration forms will be available to download at, or by calling 812.988.2785.
