Pickin' Perfection at the Indiana State Fingerstyle Guitar Festival, July 28-30

Some of the country’s finest fingerstyle guitar players will return to Brown County at the end of this month for the sixth annual Indiana State Fingerstyle Guitar Festival. From a world-class competition and concert to guitar workshops led by the pros, July 28-30 are sure to be three days of pickin’ perfection.

A weekend filled with toe-tapping fun, guests will be dazzled by the art of fingerstyle playing and the sheer talent of top guitarists. Festivities will get underway on Friday, July 28 with a Friday Night Kick-Off Party from 6 p.m. - 11 p.m. at the Brown County Inn. Some serious guitar talent will be featured at the party on Friday. Not only will many of the weekend’s competitors rotate through the open mic stage, but local favorites Cari Ray and Chuck Wills will dazzle the crowd. Food and drinks will be available for purchase too. Party tickets are $5 and will be available at the door.

The tunes will continue on Saturday, July 29, with the Festival's main events: the competition and concert. Beginning at 11 a.m. at the Brown County Playhouse, 20 of the country's top fingerstyle guitarists will battle it out for a grand prize and bragging rights as the best during the Fest’s competition. Spectators are sure to be amazed by the skill flowing from the fingertips of this year's competitors.

New to the 2017 festival is the U.S. premiere of the documentary Acoustic Uprising! Directed by Drew Roller, this film explores the innovative world of acoustic fingerstyle guitar playing and features interviews with many leading players, including Andy McKee, Kaki King, Newton Faulkner and Tommy Emmanuel. A look at the rich history of fingerstyle, Acoustic Uprising delves into the fusion of musical ideas that the style has become known for. Acoustic Uprising will be shown following the competition at the Brown County Playhouse on July 29 at 2 p.m.

At 7:30 p.m. the top three finishers from the day's competition will take the Playhouse stage during the evening concert, delighting guests with their pickin' prowess. They will be followed by three magnificent artists who will finish out the evening concert. Nationally-acclaimed, top-ranking guitarists Jack Wilson, Brian Henke, and Michael Kelsey are scheduled to take the stage.

Tickets to Saturday’s competition are $15.50, which also includes admission into the premiere of Acoustic Uprising. Saturday evening concert tickets are $22.50 and will also admit guests to the movie shown earlier in the day. Concert tickets may be upgraded to VIP status for $32.50. VIP ticket seating is in the first four rows and includes a $40 voucher for future Brown County Playhouse events. That's not all! To cap off a weekend filled with great music, guitar workshops will be offered on Sunday, July 30. From 9:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Brown County Inn, eager guitarists will be able to learn the ins and outs of fingerstyle fun from experts Jack Wilson, Lance Allen, and Brian Henke, all top players in North America. From strumming for beginners and intermediate level techniques to playing harp guitar, workshop-goers will learn how to perfect their pickin’ game.
