Pickin' Perfection at the 4th Annual Indiana State Fingerstyle Guitar Festival, July 31-August 2 in Brown County
July 20, 2015
Brown County will welcome some of the country’s finest fingerstyle guitar players for three days of pickin’ perfection, July 31-August 2. Back for a fourth year, the Indiana State Fingerstyle Guitar Festival not only will feature a world-class competition and concert on Saturday, but also will include a fun Friday tent party and Sunday guitar workshops.
Bringing together top guitarists, along with hobbyists and enthusiasts, this festival celebrates the fingerstyle way of playing that America has come to know and love. Using only their fingertips or fingernails, fingerstyle players will delight guests with their tuneful talent during this three day music bash in Brown County.
Kicking off the festival on July 31 is the Friday Night Party. From 7 p.m. – 11:30 p.m. at the Pine Room Tavern, guests will be treated to a night of music, food, and fun. A large tent and outdoor stage, along with an indoor stage, will provide perfect platforms for acoustic musicians from all over the country to show off their fingerstyle skills. Friday night performers will set the stage for the weekend ahead, warming up their fingers and the audience’s ears for more days of fingerstyle to follow. Along with performances by Cari Ray & The Loaners, Maxwell Hughes, and many other well-known guitarists, the Gnawbone Tenderloin Food Truck also will be on site for hungry guests. Admission to the Friday Night Party is free with open seating in the outdoor tent. However, reservations are recommended for inside seating.
The music will continue on Saturday, August 1, with the festival's main event, the fourth annual fingerstyle competition. Beginning at 11 a.m. at the Brown County Playhouse, 40 of the country's best fingerstyle guitarists will dazzle the audience as they compete for the grand prize – a handmade $5500 OC Bear Guitar.
Guests are encouraged to stick around for the festival’s evening concert, where winners of the competition will be announced. The competition’s top three finishers also will show off their skills as they perform a few songs for the crowd. Featured performers and fingerstyle phenoms Jack Wilson, Jonathan Brown, Tim and Myles Thompson, and Michael Kelsey will then grace the stage, delivering some show stopping performances of their own. The concert will take place at the Brown County Playhouse as well, with a 7:30 p.m. start time.
Tickets for Saturday’s competition and evening concert can be purchased in person at the Brown County Playhouse or online at https://browncountyplayhouse.org/tickets. An All Day Pass, including admission to both the competition and concert, will be offered this year for $22.50. Tickets only to the evening concert are $17.50
To round out the weekend, guitar workshops for both beginners and advanced players will be offered on Sunday, August 2, at the Brown County Inn. From songwriting and strumming to hand tapping and everything in between, fingerstyle experts will teach participants how to perfect their pickin’ game.
Those who are interested are encouraged to pre-register for the workshops online at http://indianastringfest.com/workshop-registration/. Registration the day of the event will still be available; however, pre-registration is preferred.
